The Runaway Present

It all began when Alex, who swears “Elf” is the greatest movie ever made, spotted a mysterious present under the tree. “Nobody touch this,” Alex whispered, and tiptoed ⬅ LEFT for a cookie. At that exact moment a gust of snowy wind blew the door open, and the box went sliding RIGHT ➡ across the floor.

Jamie, who once dreamed of being an astronaut, watched it zoom RIGHT ➡ past. “Houston,” Jamie said calmly, “we have a problem.” Sam, who can fall asleep anywhere, opened one eye, rolled ⬅ LEFT on the couch, and went straight back to snoring. So much for backup.

Riley dove RIGHT ➡ to catch it and landed in the tree, which shook, which dropped about forty ornaments, which sent the box spinning ⬅ LEFT into the kitchen. Morgan, holding a mug of cocoa like a trophy, hopped RIGHT ➡, then ⬅ LEFT, then RIGHT ➡ to dodge it. Not one drop spilled. The crowd went wild.

Casey, who can almost juggle, spotted the box mid-skid and leaped in. Up it went: ⬅ LEFT, RIGHT ➡, ⬅ LEFT, RIGHT ➡. Casey juggled the present, two oranges and a candle snuffer, and for three glorious seconds nothing fell. Then a very small elf-shaped cookie rolled RIGHT ➡ under Casey's foot.

The box sailed through the air, bounced ⬅ LEFT off the wall, and landed perfectly in Taylor's arms. Taylor read the tag out loud: “To Everyone Who Chased Me. Love, the Present.” The room fell silent. Then Taylor passed it RIGHT ➡ to Alex, who passed it ⬅ LEFT to Jamie, who passed it RIGHT ➡ to Sam, who finally woke up.

Inside was one big box of cookies, with a note that said: “Share me.” So they did. The box went ⬅ LEFT, then RIGHT ➡, then ⬅ LEFT, then one last time RIGHT ➡, straight into the happiest hands in the room, and every single cookie vanished before the movie even started.
